How to Starve By Teaching a Man to Fish

I sent this out to my subscribers this morning. I’m posting it here just to give you an idea of the type of information you receive as a subscriber. If you think it’s important to the success of your business to get a steady diet of information like this, then get on the list. You can subscribe a bunch of places on my site. Here’s the message I sent:

Dear Business Builder,

I’ve got a few client deadlines staring me in the face and I
was writing some email sequences over the weekend that
reminded me of something important.

The quote below pretty much sums it up. Oh… I took some
liberties with it and adapted it just a wee bit.

So here’s my “adapted” quote… with apologies to Confucius:

“Give a man a fish, and you’ll feed him for a day. Teach a
man to fish, and you’ve fed him for a lifetime. Teach him to
fish before he pays you for your help and they’ll be NO fish
for you!”

Selling is about focusing demand on what you have. It is
about focusing that demand so clearly that someone can’t
help but to buy your product or service.

There is tension there that the sale releases. But teaching
creates little to no tension. And teaching creates little to
no attraction.

That’s fine if all you’re trying to do is TEACH.

After all, teaching is a valuable thing. It can change
lives. But if you’re in the selling business, teaching can
be a killer if you don’t use it correctly.

Teaching doesn’t sell. SELLING sells.

A lot of people are good teachers. Far fewer are good at
selling.

If you want to change lives, learn to teach. If you want to
get paid really well for changing lives, make sure you learn
to sell.

I don’t control the way the world works, but I do my best to
pay attention to the way it works.

Talk to you soon,
