Being Unreachable and Totally Accessible

It’s been maybe a week since I killed my smart phone.

Eventually, I’ll get a cell phone that just makes calls. But right now, I’m cell phone free for the first time in YEARS.

And I’ve realized something when I go out without a cell phone.

I’m totally unreachable and totally accessible.

I’m accessible to the moment and unreachable by anything that would try to pull me out of it.

So what is the business benefit to being “in the moment?”

Here’s the benefit:

Pulling yourself out of the moment limits your effectiveness by fragmenting your attention and focus.

How effective would a fighter pilot be in a dog fight if they were reading the latest copy of Men’s Health?

They’d get killed.

And that’s what happens to us each and every day we go through in a constant state of distraction.

Except we don’t go down in a big ball of fire. We die bit by bit, as our dreams exist in a place that feels constantly out of our reach.

In that situation, our dreams are out of our reach because when we’re distracted, there’s a large part of us that isn’t showing up to help reach those dreams.

But when you remove the things that pull you out of the moment, things start to change.

When I think about it, I get images of ninja movies on TV. The ones where they’re moving so fast everything seems to be moving in slow motion.

When you remove distraction, it feels like time slows down.

You begin to understand just how much time there is.

When’s the last time you’ve been FULLY present in the moment? I know I still have much work to do to get there, but I’m making progress.

Getting rid of my cell phone has been one of the biggest business building secrets I’ve uncovered in a long time.
