10 Counter Intuitive Internet Marketing Tips

Here are 10 internet marketing tips that, on the surface, sound like they might be bad advice.

  1. Make sure you’re building an internet marketing business not just marketing on the internet. Two very different things. Marketers help create sales and they generally have to keep working to make money. That’s why “gurus” keep launching things. (Smart) business owners create income by leveraging other assets (products, knowledge, other people’s effort etc.) so they don’t have to work forever.
  2. Choose your market carefully. It must be big enough to support your goals. It’s far easier to go where there’s a lot of competition than it is to build a market or build demand from scratch.
  3. To increase your sales, don’t lower your price, increase your value. And test your price. Only the market knows what the best price is, and the only language they speak is money.
  4. If you think the newest course or software package is going to create a breakthrough for you, don’t forget that anyone else who buys it will also have that same potential. Be different, be unique. You need a competitive advantage. (Hard work on a consistent basis is a good possibility.)
  5. Making money is not a goal. To keep yourself from getting swept up in the internet marketing craze, make sure you are clear about where you want to go. Then evaluate each of your decisions based on the answer to, “Will this decision move me closer to my goal or farther from it?” Ignore everyone else’s goals. They don’t matter.
  6. If anyone had the real answer to how to be successful in the internet marketing business, we would all know it by now. So stop looking for a blueprint or a roadmap. Do your own work and come up with answers through your experience. It takes longer, but it’s how you build real success. Real success doesn’t come from just following a recipe, or everyone would be doing it.
  7. This business (like any business) is not a sprint, it is a marathon. You will (most likely) not “make it” in your first year, two or maybe even three. Stop looking for instant success or you will be stuck on that wheel for ever. Despite what you hear, the internet marketing business is a business for tortoises, not hares.
  8. Traffic is not the solution to your problems. Having something to sell that people actually want to buy is far more important.
  9. You do not need the gurus to succeed, but they do need you. Never forget that. Internet marketing is not rocket science.
  10. Getting rich quick is possible, it’s not just probable. Just because society has a stigma about “getting rich quick” (even though they all want to get rich quick), doesn’t mean squat. It’s your life.
